Film historian Steven Fredrick will present a two-pronged program of historic World War II film shorts and a related Downtown walking tour geared to give the war a historic perspective timed to the upcoming 66th anniversary of the Dec. 7 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Fredrick, who collects rare Hawai'i-themed films, has assembled a blend of films that depict Hawai'i during the war years, at 7 p.m. Dec. 5 at a VIP screening room.
Cost is $10; call 395-0674 for location, or e-mail filmguy54@hotmail.com to reserve a space.
The program will include "Hawaii During World War II: The Movies and the Music of the 1940s," with vintage newsreel images filmed during the attack by Japan at Pearl Harbor that triggered World War II.
Also on the bill: Porky Pig, in a rare Looney Tunes cartoon, and musical shorts featuring Lani McIntire and His Aloha Islanders.
"It's a mixed plate of film comedy and historic tragedy," said Fredrick of the films.
"We will be looking at original film prints from 60 to 65 years ago. These films are not DVDs or video copies.
"We have the real McCoy here. Some of these films have not been seen in Hawai'i since World War II."
Fredrick also will guide a historic walking tour starting at 2 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Kamehameha I statue on King Street. It is a 2 1/2-mile trek through Downtown and Chinatown that will point out pool halls, taverns, diners and dancehalls favored by servicemen.
Cost is $20. Reservations are also required at 395-0674.
