Bulldogs, Lunas hope to run wild

Kaimuki and Lahainaluna prefer to run the ball, but they like to go about it differently.
Kaimuki will go with little workhorse Justin Paderes out of the I-formation.
Lahainaluna will rely more on balance with seniors Lake Casco, Jacob McCarthy and Kailas McGhee getting equal work out of the Wing-T formation.
The team that does the better job establishing the run Saturday night likely will win their First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division II State Football Championships semifinal game at War Memorial Stadium.
"It'll be a fast game. I think we'll finish before any of the other teams since we both like to run," said Kaimuki coach Darren Johnson.
Kaimuki, the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Division champion, has run the ball 69 percent of the time this season (424 rushes/193 pass attempts).
Paderes, a 5-foot-2, 135-pound junior, has 229 carries for 1,493 yards and 16 touchdowns this season for Kaimuki (11-1). No other Bulldog has more than 58 carries.
In a first-round game against Kamehameha-Hawai'i last week, Paderes had 27 carries for 111 yards in a 22-0 victory.
"He's small and does a good job staying behind his big blockers," said Lahainaluna coach Robert Watson.
Kaimuki, which has won 11 in a row, also had its best defensive game of the season against the Warriors, allowing just 20 total yards.
"Our defensive staff does a really good job," Johnson said. "Sola Soliai (the defensive coordinator) does a good job. He does his homework and puts in good, long hours."
Lahainaluna, the Maui Interscholastic League champion, runs the ball 86 percent of the time (292 rushes/48 pass attempts).
"They run the Wing-T to perfection," Johnson said. "Their backs do a good job of play faking, and the quarterback handles the ball well."
The distribution of carries among Casco (39 carries for 389 yards), McCarthy (38/308) and McGhee (40/322) is almost equal. The Lunas average 6.4 yards per carry.
"We really don't depend on one particular runner," Watson said.
Their styles are similar, according to Watson.
"One isn't more slashier than the other," he said.
Added Johnson: "They have really fast kids. Their team speed is amazing."
Lahainaluna (8-1) had a first-round bye and hasn't played since Oct. 19.
"Hopefully, we can get our timing back," Watson said. "We had a couple kids we had to heal up. It works both ways I guess."
Either team could catch the other off-guard when it goes to the air.
Kaimuki's Kapono Kaiwi-Barrenuebo has completed 98 of 182 passes for 1,398 yards and 11 touchdowns.
His primary receivers are Chezz Ramos-Dias (25 catches for 381 yards) and Romnick Pagurayan (22 for 327 and six touchdowns).
Both of Ramos-Dias' catches last week against Kamehameha-Hawai'i went for touchdowns.
Lahainaluna's Jake Manning has been effective when he's had to throw, completing 29 of 47 passes for 467 yards with three interceptions and five touchdowns.
His favorite targets are Chris Wanke (14 receptions for 234 yards) and Matthew Lawless (11 for 105).
