MANOA
Deadline to comment on Manoa antenna is Friday

Advertiser Staff

Residents have until Friday to submit comments about a plan to install a 60-foot antenna made to look like a palm tree at the historic Manoa Chinese Cemetery.

T-Mobile has proposed putting in the antenna to improve cell phone coverage in the area. Manoa residents have largely voiced opposition to the proposal.

A draft environmental assessment for the project was completed in July, and residents are being asked to comment on the document. T-Mobile has not yet applied for the zoning waiver and minor conditional use permit it needs to start the project, city officials said. With some 10,000 graves, the Manoa Chinese Cemetery is the oldest and largest Chinese cemetery in the Islands and is listed on the state historic register.

Send comments on the plan to Henry Eng, director of the city Planning Department; 650 S. King St.; Honolulu, HI, 96813. Comments can also be faxed to 527-5041.
