Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill, a cafe developed in partnership with rocker and Maui resident Sammy Hagar, is one of several new eateries scheduled to open at the Kahului Airport.

The new restaurants are part of an expansion by HMSHost Corp., which was recently awarded a lease extension through 2013 to run the concessions at the Kahului Airport.

HMSHost has a growing presence in Hawai'i with operations in the Lihu'e Airport and a recently extended lease at Hono-lulu International Airport, which runs through 2014.

State Department of Transportation Director Barry Fukunaga said the state has been "extremely pleased" with the current HMSHost concessions and is looking forward to working with the company to "further enhance the airport's offerings to travelers."

Sammy's Beach Bar & Grill, a new full-service restaurant, is scheduled to open in early 2008. Developed in partnership with Hagar of Van Halen fame, the restaurant will feature "classic American fare."

The restaurant decor will feature signed memorabilia from Hagar's personal collection and a full bar serving fresh fruit cocktails. Music selections will include tunes by Hagar, Van Halen and other rock and "surf-inspired music."

All of Hagar's profits from the restaurant chain will be donated to local Hawai'i charities via the Red Rocker Foundation, an organization Hagar and his wife, Kari, are establishing to help support children's organizations.

Other new eateries under construction at the airport include Jamba Juice, California Pizza Kitchen, a Burger King and a second Starbucks.

The new eateries will join restaurants already in operation at the airport including the Plantation Snack Bar and Stinger Ray's Grill and Bar. In addition to the existing Starbucks in the main terminal, a new location will open in the baggage claim area.

HMSHost operates in more than 100 airport locations around the globe, including 19 of the 20 busiest airports in North America.

HMSHost has annual sales in excess of $2.3 billion and employs more than 28,000 workers worldwide.
