Cajimat, McKee take gold at taekwondo event

Hawai'i's Jayme Cajimat and Jarred McKee captured gold medals in their respective divisions at the Pan American Taekwondo Championships that ended Oct. 7 in Daytona Beach, Fla.

Cajimat, of 'Ewa Beach, captured the male flyweight crown and McKee, of 'Aiea, won the male bantamweight title.

Cajimat and McKee were competing on the United States team, which earned 17 medals (11 gold, four silver and two bronze) in the competition.

"I'm feeling complete pride and jubilation," U.S. coach Jean Lopez said. "We've always talked about the U.S. being the best and dominating, and our juniors are doing that. These juniors are our future and our future looks bright."

Cajimat beat Pedro Arturo Romualdo Dominguez, 3-0, in his final, and McKee defeated Edgar Sanchez, 1-0, in overtime in his final.

MAUI WOMEN'S TEAM FINISHES 4TH IN EVENT

A women's team from Kahului, Maui, finished in fourth place at the United States Tennis Association League 3.0 Senior National Championships in Indian Wells, Calif., that ended Sunday.

The squad won its round-robin flight that was held the first two days of the event. In the semifinals Sunday, the Maui team lost to Bellevue, Wash., 3-0. In the third-place match, Bluffton, S.C., dispatched the Hawai'i team, 3-0.

The team members are: Rena Hayashi and Dorothy Gordon (captains), Clare Apana, Marilyn Araki, Nancy Benson, Carmen Johns, Judy Murakami, Charlotte Pontanilla, Tupou Puleiku, Shirl Schumacher and Patricia Tatro.
