Officials yesterday said foul play is not suspected in the deaths of two people aboard the Celebrity Summit cruise liner.

According to Honolulu police, an 83-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman died Sunday about an hour apart after both went to the ship's infirmary complaining of breathing difficulties.

Their bodies were turned over to authorities when the Bahamian-registered ship docked in Honolulu at 6:45 a.m. Wednesday.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office yesterday identified the man as Joseph Gausepohl, of Houston, and the woman as Norell Munday, of Concord, Calif.

Gausepohl was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m. while Munday died at 1:45 p.m.

The Celebrity Summit, which came to Honolulu from San Diego, departed for Los Angeles at 11 p.m. yesterday.

BIG ISLAND GIVEN DRUG COURT GRANT

The Big Island has been awarded a $443,405 federal grant to establish a 3rd Circuit Drug Court team to supervise and track high-risk defendants with drug problems, it was announced yesterday in a news release.

U.S. Attorney for Hawai'i Ed Kubo and Jay Kimura, the Hawai'i County prosecuting attorney, said the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services grant provides money to hire two additional probation officers and one paralegal each for the prosecutor's and public defender's offices.

ARREST IN ALLEGED SEX ASSAULT OF BOY

Police yesterday arrested a 50-year-old man at his Newtown home on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy.

The victim told police the alleged assault occurred Oct. 23.

The man was arrested at 11 a.m. and booked for investigation of first-degree sex assault.

MAUI OIL RECYCLING SITES DOWN TO 11

The Maui County Department of Environmental Management said the used motor oil collection site at the Ha'iku Parts Plus store on Ha'iku Road has been closed because of the sale of the building.

MINI POW WOW TODAY IN WAIKIKI

A free, public Mini Pow Wow will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Waikiki Community Center, 310 Paoakalani Ave., to kick off Native American Heritage month in Hawai'i.

The event will feature dancing, singing, native foods such as frybread and crafts for sale.

Participants include dancers Mike Runningwind and Cady Ching, master of ceremonies Catcher Cuts the Rope, and arena director Tom Rowland.

NEW FARMERS MARKET IN KONA

A new farmers market opened yesterday morning in Kailua, Kona, in the Kmart shopping area at 74-5465 Kamakaeha Ave.

The market will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Nonprofit associations will be offered free space at the market every week for fundraising events. Other market space is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

MAUI COMMUNITY CENTER WILL CLOSE

The Velma McWayne Santos Community Center, formerly known as the Wailuku Community Center, will be closed beginning Nov. 19 for extensive renovations, the Maui County parks department announced. The center is scheduled to reopen March 10.

Renovations will include kitchen upgrades to stainless steel counters, new sinks and nonslip polyurethane-concrete floor resurfacing, the installation of vinyl composition-tile flooring and acoustic ceiling panels in the main hall, and replacement of upper jalousie windows.

The total design and construction cost for the project is $645,000. Kitchen improvements are being done by Central Construction Inc., with main hall work being done by David P. Ting & Sons.
