The Honolulu Symphony this week presented its "kid-friendly" youth concert featuring some of the world's most famous music for an audience of students from six elementary schools at the Cannon Activities Center at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i.
The concert, titled "The Color of Sound," included selections from composers including Mendelssohn, Prokofiev, Gershwin and Stravinsky, a news release said.
Jon Magnussen, the symphony's education director, and Hawai'i Theatre education director Hester Kamin also presented a skit throughout the concert to guide the students through the pieces and teach them basic musical terms and concepts, according to the release.
In addition, the symphony yesterday presented its In-School Ensembles at eight O'ahu locations, featuring quartets and quintets appearing at schools and other facilities.
According to its Web site, the symphony each year brings music to more than 20,000 young people and their families through its Education and Community Outreach programs. The offerings include In-School Ensemble performances, the Youth Concert performances, and professional development for teachers workshops.
