Federal officials have announced a $200,000 grant to boost the Weed and Seed program in Pahoa on the Big Island.

Under the Department of Justice's Weed and Seed program, half the money is used for law enforcement, and half for community-building efforts such as youth activities.

Previous grants for the Pahoa Weed and Seed effort were used to install surveillance cameras in downtown Pahoa, demolish alleged drug houses, pay police overtime and launch an anti-drunk-driving educational program for teens.

The Salvation Army Family Intervention Services will receive and manage the grant money.
