Fujino helps Linfield win NCAA III title desert delights

Linfield (McMinnville, Ore.), with freshman Candice Fujino (Konawaena 2006) starting at designated player, defeated Washington-St. Louis, 10-2, yesterday to capture its first NCAA Division III national softball title.
Fujino, who is from Kealakekua on the Big Island, batted 5 for 16 with two RBIs in six tournament games.
BASEBALL
Marciel walked the first batter he faced and then retired 12 of his next 13. He did not give up a base hit until the sixth inning. Marciel allowed three earned runs on three hits, with five strikeouts.
Hirota, the team's clean-up hitter, batted .318.
Also on Shoreline's roster are freshman catcher Paul Domingo (Pearl City '05), sophomore outfielder Justin Goo (Roosevelt '04), sophomore left-hander Justin Kekaualua (Waiakea '05), freshman shortstop Markus Miyashiro (Moanalua '06), freshman first baseman Aaron Nakasone (Pearl City '06) and sophomore right-hander Kurt Silva (Kahuku '05).
Shoreline coach Steve Seki is a Saint Louis graduate. His father, Mel Seki, is the coach of the Pearl City baseball team that reached this year's state tournament championship game.
Lester hit a two-out, three-run home run in the first inning.
Both teams received berths for the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series, a 10-team, double-elimination tournament hosted by Lewis-Clark State.
Azusa Pacific received a top seed and Lewis-Clark State a No. 3. By contractual agreement with the NAIA, the host cannot receive higher than the No. 3 seed.
Morgado led the team with a .395 batting average, with 12 doubles, four home runs and 24 RBIs.
WOMEN'S GOLF
The tournament concludes Friday.
Stanford sophomore Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) is tied for 39th after a 76.
Chun was earlier named to the Pac-10 Conference second team.
Idaho junior Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin '04) became the first Vandal to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. She is tied for 95th at 80.
