LOS ANGELES — For the second straight day, the University of Hawai'i softball team played extra innings, and for the second time, the Rainbow Wahine were victorious.

Brandi Peiler hit a two-run double in the top of the eighth inning to lead second-seeded Hawai'i to a 3-1 victory yesterday over top-seeded UCLA to reach the NCAA Softball Los Angeles Regional title game.

The Rainbow Wahine (48-11) today face Loyola Marymount (47-17), which eliminated UCLA, 4-2, in the nightcap. UH needs one win to advance to the NCAA Super Regionals. The Lions would have to beat UH twice today to advance.

"UCLA, when we play them, usually has our number," UH coach Bob Coolen said. "This is a nice victory for us right now, but it's not the end of the line."

It was only the fourth time UH beat UCLA in 17 games and the first time since 1994.

Today's 11:30 a.m. (Hawai'i time) game can be heard on AM 1420 and will be televised by ESPNU. Should a second game be necessary, it will be played immediately after the first game.

In the top of the eighth, Clare Warwick singled to right field, and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kaulana Gould. After Tyleen Tausaga was intentionally walked, Kate Robinson singled to left to fill the bases. Peiler then doubled down the left-field line scoring Warwick and Tausaga.

"It was a great feeling but it's not over yet," said Peiler, who drove in all three Hawai'i runs. "I don't want to jump up for joy yet. There's always another game. That's what we're looking for."

Peiler broke a scoreless game in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

With one out, Gould, Tausaga and Robinson hit consecutive singles. On a full count, Peiler flied out to left field, scoring Gould.

"In the sixth inning, I got to see more pitches so I was a little more comfortable in the box," Peiler said.

UCLA tied the game in the bottom of the sixth when Tara Henry singled to left, and scored on a single by Jodie Legaspi.

Robinson (16-1) pitched her 16th complete game yesterday.

Coolen said he decided on using Robinson against UCLA yesterday based on matchups, observations and stats — and it paid off.

Robinson allowed four hits — all singles — while striking out four and walking two.

Megan Langenfeld (14-3) struck out six and walked one in taking the loss.

On Friday, the Rainbow Wahine struggled offensively with just three hits in their 2-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara. Yesterday, UH got 11 hits, with Tanisha Milca, Gould, Tausaga, Robinson and Peiler getting two apiece.

"We took some extra batting practice so we could get our bats together and it showed with the number of hits we got," Coolen said.

In yesterday's first elimination game, Loyola Marymount rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 5-3.
