After a long flat spell, longboarding is back on O'ahu.

The Steinlager Longboard Series opened its 2007 season last month. The second of five events on the schedule is set for this weekend at Kaka'ako Beach Park.

A similar series of contests for longboard surfers ended in 2003.

"The longboarders really wanted to start it up again," series director Wendell Aoki said. "At our first event (last month), we had over 100 entries, and I think we're going to get more and more as the guys find out about it."

All surfers in the longboard series must ride boards at least 9 feet long, and with a rounded nose.

The series features divisions for surfers of all ages, ranging from menehune (14 and younger) to legends (60 and older).

"It's more of a family atmosphere with the longboarders," Aoki said.

There is also a pro-am division, and most of Hawai'i's top professionals are expected to participate, including Kekoa Uemura, Ned Snow, Bonga Perkins and Duane DeSoto.

The series will also feature a stand-up paddle surfing division. In that division, surfers must stroke into the waves with a canoe paddle.

"This is the first circuit for those guys, so they're excited about it," Aoki said.

The first event was completed at Sunset Beach last month. For information on the remaining events in the series, visit www.hspsurf.org.

Schedule: Tomorrow and Sunday at Kaka'ako Beach; June 30 and July 1 at Queen's Surf, Waikiki; July 21 and 22 at Ala Moana Bowls; Sept. 8 and 9 or 15 and 16 at Hale'iwa.
