LANIKAI
Club kids spiff up WWII site

Advertiser Staff

The hike to the World War II pillboxes above Lanikai just got a little nicer.

Members of the Windward Soccer Club's Volcanos Surf Cup team spent two weekends this month removing litter, glass and graffiti from the area, which sits on Ka Iwi ridge.

The group of 13 boys and three girls also created signs describing the significance of the pillboxes, concrete bunkers used to guard against potential Japanese attacks in the war.

The group received support from the Castle Foundation, Marine Corps, state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Kamehameha Schools and Mid-Pacific Country Club.
