Roosevelt, Sacred Hearts earn top seeds in tourney

Roosevelt and Sacred Hearts received the top seeds for the Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball State Championships that begins tomorrow.
The four seeds in each of the 12-team Division I and Division II tournaments receive a first-round bye and begin play Wednesday.
Roosevelt (14-1), the Division I top seed, is the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion. Other seeds are No. 2 Konawaena (14-0) of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation, No. 3 'Iolani (11-2) of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu and No. 4 Lahainaluna (13-1) of the Maui Interscholastic League.
Sacred Hearts (13-0), of the ILH, is the Division II's top seed. Also seeded are No. 2 McKinley (14-1) of the OIA, No. 3 Seabury Hall (12-0) of the MIL and No. 4 Hawai'i Prep (9-5) of the BIIF.
All Division I games will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Division II games will be played at McKinley and Farrington gyms with the final, third- and fifth-place games at Stan Sheriff Center. The championships for both divisions are on Friday.
Lana'i (7-5) and Sacred Hearts are both making their first state tournament appearances, while Kailua (10-5) is making its first appearance since 1993.
Punahou (9-5) is the two-time defending state Division I champion. Kalani (12-3), last year's Division II champion, is in the Division I tournament this year.
