UH-Hilo softball ousted, 3-0

Seattle University eliminated Hawai'i-Hilo, 3-0, yesterday in the NCAA Division II Softball Championship West Regional tournament at Turlock, Calif.

Amanda Nilles hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the second and Brenda Stice added a run-scoring double in the third for the Redhawks (35-22) at Cal State-Stanislaus' Warrior Field.

UH-Hilo's Sarah Weisskopf struck out six batters and gave up one hit in 3 1/3 innings of relief of starter Tracy Ryan, who allowed six hits and three runs in 2 2/3 innings.

Dana Lee was the only player to get more than one hit for the Vulcans (42-13).


GOLF

KAUA'I'S WATABU WINS HICKAM INVITATIONAL

U.S. Public Links champion Casey Watabu fired a 4-under-par 68 to win the Hickam Invitational by five strokes over Alex Chu yesterday at Mamala Bay.

Watabu, of Kaua'i, finished at 6-under-par 210. Chu closed with a 1-under 71 and ended at 215.

Second-round leader Lorens Chan shot a 4-over 76 after his 69 on Saturday and finished third, seven behind at 217.

Defending champion Craig Uyehara shot a final-round 76 and finished 12th at 225.

Other division winners were: Bill Henry (229, A Flight), Wes Anderson (242, B Flight), Peter Olson (225, Senior Flight), and George Yamamoto (222, Super Senior Flight).


MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

MILLER TOPS MIURA IN LAS VEGAS BOUT

Former Icon Sport middleweight champion Jason "Mayhem" Miller defeated Japan's Hiromitsu Miura in a mixed martial arts bout at Las Vegas on Saturday.

Miller defeated Miura by unanimous decision to improve his record to 19-5. Miura dropped to 6-4. The bout lasted three 5-minute rounds.

The card was put on by the World Extreme Cagefighting organization at the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel & Casino.

On the undercard, Honolulu resident Sidney Silva lost by knockout to Tom Speer.


VOLLEYBALL

HAWAI'I GIRLS TEAM WINS NATIONAL QUALIFIER

The Lehua 14 girls team from Asics Rainbows Club went unbeaten to finish first out of 76 teams at the Southern California National Qualifier last month. Lehua earned the bid to play in the 2007 Junior Olympic Volleyball Championships in Minneapolis next month.

The team is coached by Lehua Kadooka and Leigh Sinoto. Team members are Reina Fujiwara, Kelsey Lee, Jaymee Kau, Kylee Oshiro, Jacky Pedro, Lauren Leong, Maddie Miller, Brittany Ulmer, Alexis Szigeti, Alana Carmichael and Taylor Yamamoto.

HAWAI'I PLAYERS, COACH PICKED FOR ELITE TEAMS

Fifteen players and a coach from Hawai'i have been selected to participate with USA Volleyball's Boys High Performance, A2 and Developmental programs this summer.

Six Hawai'i boys will train at the USA Select A2 Camp in Colorado: Richard Budar (Honolulu), Nicholas Christman (Honolulu), Christian Kahookaulana (Pahoa), Clayton Morante (Kea'au), Scott Sakaida (Honolulu) and Tyler Tanaka (Kailua). The camp is for players who will graduate in 2009 and 2010.

Honolulu's Kawika Shoji and Spencer McLachlin, who will be teammates at Stanford in the fall, made the roster for the Men's Junior National Training Team. It starts practice at Lake Placid, N.Y., June 15 and will compete in the Men's Junior World Championships, July 7 to 16 in Morocco.

The Boys Youth National Training Team will be coached by University of Hawai'i men's associate Tino Reyes. His team will include Honolulu's Tri Bourne, Brad Lawson and Erik Shoji. They will train in Chula Vista, Calif., from July 24 and travel to the Boys' Youth World Championships in Mexico, Aug. 15 to 26.

The Boys' Select A1 Camp will include Taylor Donovan (Kailua) and Kenneth Rewick (Honolulu). In July they will train in Florida and participate in the U.S. High Performance Championships. Hilo's Chandler Kaaa and Kamuela's Nicolaas Schenk will play on the Boys' Youth A2 team at the same time.


BASKETBALL

EX-'BOW SANDERS SIGNS WITH WNBA'S SHOCK

The WNBA's Detroit Shock signed former Hawai'i guard Amy Sanders to a training camp contract on April 27.

Sanders played five minutes in the Shock's 74-72 preseason victory over the Houston Comets on May 4. She didn't score but grabbed three rebounds.

On May 6, Sanders played 17 minutes in a 73-55 win over the Washington Mystics. She was 1 of 3 in field-goal attempts and 1 of 2 in free-throw attempts for three points. She also had four rebounds.

Sanders completed her UH eligibility last year.

The Shock open against Sacramento on May 19.

UH TICKET HOLDERS GET DISCOUNT TO CAMPS

University of Hawai'i men's basketball head coach Bob Nash announced new discounted rates for the program's upcoming summer camps.

New and existing season ticket holders will receive a $50 discount off of the $150 camp fee.

Nash and his coaching staff will conduct three camp sessions per day from June 8 to 13 at the lower campus. Each session runs for three hours.

Camps are open to students ages 5-17 and they will be grouped according to their age. For the first time, a one-day only session involving parents and their child will be held on the final day of camp.

The deadline for renewals of season tickets is May 18. However, new season-ticket orders are now being taken, for a $50 non-refundable deposit on www.HawaiiAthletics.com.

TENNIS

UH'S WEBER EARNS AT-LARGE NCAA BERTH

University of Hawai'i men's tennis player Andreas Weber will be among the 64 singles players that will compete in the 2007 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships.

The freshman from Huenfeld, Germany, earned an at-large selection on May 2, becoming the first Rainbow Warrior tennis player to gain an invitation since the NCAA went to a 64-player format.

The singles and doubles competition will be May 23 to 28 at Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.

The team championship will be May 17 to 22.

Weber is ranked 48th in the ITA/FILA rankings. He achieved the school's highest-ever singles ranking at No. 37 in January and was named Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year.

CHAMINADE WOMEN'S COACH STEPS DOWN

Chris James announced he is stepping down as the women's tennis coach at Chaminade University.

The Silverswords went 2-12 this past season.

Chaminade said it will begin looking for a new coach immediately.
