Big Island police have identified the Kailua, Kona, man killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday night as 28-year-old Kenneth A. Hayes.

Hayes was operating a 2007 Harley-Davidson and traveling north on Kapuna Street when he hit a curb and was thrown from the motorcycle, police said.

Speed, alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash, police said. Hayes was not wearing a helmet.

LILIHA PEDESTRIAN SIGNAL ON ITS WAY

A new pedestrian traffic signal on School Street will be activated at 9 a.m. Tuesday, city officials have announced.

The new mid-block signal, fronting St. Theresa's school, lights up when a pedestrian presses a button before crossing the street.

Until Tuesday, the signal is in a constantly flashing mode to alert motorists to its presence, officials said.

"This is part of our effort to improve pedestrian safety Islandwide," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said.

POLICE SEEKING MISSING INMATE

Honolulu police were searching last night for a prison inmate who failed to return from a furlough.

Troy Henry Sacapanio, 34, was listed as an escapee after he failed to return from the furlough at 4 p.m. yesterday, a spokesman for the O'ahu Community Correctional Center said.

Sacapanio was serving time for a parole violation. He had previously been in prison on charges of burglary and promotion of dangerous drugs, the spokesman said.
