HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police have identified a man whose vehicle went off a cliff in the Puna subdivision of Hawaiian Paradise Park as 48-year-old Terrance Manion.
Police called to the scene at 12:31 p.m. Wednesday found a 2004 Hummer had gone off the cliff and into the ocean off Beach Road, just south of Paradise Drive.
The body of Manion, who lived in the subdivision, was removed from the car by a Hawai'i County Fire Department crew.
Police said it was unknown if drugs, alcohol or speed were involved in the crash, and have scheduled an autopsy for today.
Manion's death was not counted in the Big Island's official traffic fatality statistics because he did not die on a public roadway.
TICKET LEADS TO STOLEN-CAR ARREST
A 40-year-old 'Ewa Villages man was arrested yesterday morning after police found him driving a car that had been reported stolen.
A patrol officer ordered the man to pull over about 5:30 a.m. near the intersection of Nale and Tenny streets to issue a citation for a traffic violation. Police said the officer noticed the car's ignition had been "punched" and checked to see if the car had been reported as stolen.
After learning the car was on the stolen vehicle list, the officer arrested the driver on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.
EXPLOSIVES FOUND BY WAIAKEA HOME
An ordnance disposal team was called in Wednesday night by the Hawai'i County fire and police departments to remove explosive material behind a Big Island home.
Just before 2 p.m. Wednesday, firefighters responded to a resident's call that she discovered what appeared to be dynamite in cases with military markings in two storage structures behind her home at 292 Lyman Ave. in Waiakea.
Big Island police secured Lyman Avenue between Andrews and Baker avenues, evacuating residents while they investigated the material.
The ordnance disposal team found several spools of detonation cord, blasting caps, several cases of training simulator charges, shotgun shells and other small arms ammunition.
All products were bagged, secured and removed from the site for proper disposal.
90 HELP PAINT OUT HONOLULU GRAFFITI
About 90 volunteers showed up last Saturday to paint over graffiti in the McCully and Mo'ili'ili areas.
Community leaders, concerned citizens, police officers and area residents joined the effort, organized by the T.A.G. Team.
Several private donors and area businesses — including Times Super Market, Sam's Club, Mary Catherine's Bakery and McDonald's — donated money and supplies.
They cleaned up graffiti at parks, on walls, at bus stops and on signs.
The next event is scheduled for September.

HUSBAND ARRESTED IN CAR-RAMMING
A 31-year-old man with no local address was arrested Wednesday after he allegedly used his car to ram a car being driven by his estranged wife.
Police were told the wife had gone to a Kahuku-area school to pick up her children about 12:25 p.m. when her husband pulled alongside her and the two exchanged words.
Police said the husband got upset at what was said and drove his car into the side of his wife's vehicle, pushing it up against a curb.
The husband left the area before officers arrived, but was found a few hours later and arrested on suspicion of first-degree criminal property damage.
