One of the things that make living in Hawai'i special is the annual series of obon festivals held by Buddhist temples and community organizations. The Advertiser will publish its annual bon dance calendar on June 3. If your religious or community organization is planning an obon observance, we'd like to hear from you by May 23. Please include the time, date, location, events planned and phone number. Send announcements to: Bon Dance Calendar, Island Life, The Advertiser, P.O. Box 3110, Hono-lulu, HI 96802; islandlife@honoluluadvertiser.com, with "Bon Dance Calendar" in the subject line; or fax 525-8055.

FUNDRAISER

NEXTDOOR HELPS OUT GRADE-SCHOOLERS

Chinatown multimedia venue NextDoor isn't just about hip-hop, MCs and cocktails. From 7 p.m. to midnight on May 24, it hosts a fundraiser for Teach One. The program gathers donations of school supplies, clothing and toys for an elementary school to help build students' self-esteem, which can have a positive effect on students' behavior and test scores. This year, Teach One is working with Kamaile Elementary School in Wai'anae, which is transitioning to a charter school. On the night's schedule: Secret jazz band, a raffle and light pupu. Tickets are $5 if you make a school-supply donation (e.g., backpacks, pencils, crayons, composition books); $10 without. All proceeds benefit Kamaile. For information, call Lacy Matsumoto at 953-0002.

FINAL WORD

"People go through a whole thing where they think if they don't tell people how old they are, no one will know. ... That's over now that we live in this Google age. You'll be ratted out by people you went to college with anyway."

Nora Ephron | the 65-year-old author of "I Feel Bad About My Neck," in The New York Times Magazine
