Sunset hula show will spend summer in park

Advertiser Staff

Iwalani Fuller performed at the Kuhio Beach hula mound at sunset last September. The site is getting a makeover, so the show is moving — but will be back at the beach come September.

Starting this week, the daily Kuhio Beach Torch Lighting and Hula Show will temporary relocate to the Kapi'olani Park bandstand for a few months while the city renovates the mound where the sunset show is presented.

Show time remains from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The torch-lighting will continue nightly along Kalakaua Avenue.

The project will provide improved pedestrian access to the mound, with construction of two concrete paths, one along the base of the stage and one toward the back of the viewing area.

City officials said the $120,000 project by contractor Paradigm Construction is scheduled for completion Aug. 31.

For the stage, the project will provide a wear-resistant surface on the hula mound itself. Artificial turf will replace the natural turf that proved difficult to maintain with the constant use. The contractor also will install a concrete pad at the back of the stage area.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann apologized for any inconvenience to those who watch or perform in the shows. "But the work is necessary and will result in a better setting for this highly popular show."

The sunset event, a popular tourist attraction, is presented nightly by the Hawai'i Tourism Authority, Waikiki Improvement Association and the city.
