WAIPI'O — Completing its impressive hit parade through the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball tournament, Pearl City pounded Kailua, 11-1, last night to win its first league championship since 1999.
The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.
A crowd of about 500 at Central O'ahu Regional Park watched the Chargers finish 11-3 in the OIA and earn the league's top seed and first-round bye in the upcoming state tournament.
Kailua fell to 11-2 and will begin state tournament action in first round play on Wednesday.
"It feels good, especially since we came through the long road and didn't get the first-round bye (in the OIA playoffs)," said Pearl City junior Bryson Nakamura, who pitched a four-hitter with five strikeouts and two walks last night. "We knew we had enough to win the whole thing, but it was a very long road for us and luckily we came through."
The Chargers' playoff journey started in Wednesday's first round, when they defeated visiting Moanalua and its tough left-handed ace, Kekoa Lee, 6-4. They then won at Eastern Division No. 2 seed Roosevelt, defeating Rough Riders ace Keoni Manago, 6-1.
Pearl City, the West's No. 3 seed, then knocked off Kaiser, 12-3, in Friday's semifinals with a 15-hit barrage.
The Chargers exploded for 11 runs on nine hits in the first three innings last night against East champion Kailua.
"When it comes to the fourth game (of the tournament), everybody's pitching is kind of thin so the team that is swinging the bat well will have a good chance," Pearl City coach Mel Seki said. "Bryson had much more rest than (Kailua's) top pitchers."
The Surfriders went with little-used junior Jared Tamanaha to start the game, but the Chargers touched him for two runs in the first inning and he was relieved in the second by sophomore Keoki Reis-Moniz, another seldom-used pitcher.
After Pearl City pushed the lead to 6-1 in the second, regular starter Preston Nakata was brought in, but he lasted only three batters after giving up two more runs.
Nakata pitched four-plus innings in Friday's 12-11 semifinal victory over Mililani.
Three errors and a misplayed fly ball also cost Kailua.
