Nicole Hagi finally got free, and helped the Kapolei High School water polo team advance to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship game.
Hagi scored all five of her goals after halftime, including the game-winner in double overtime, as the third-seeded Hurricanes defeated second-seeded Roosevelt, 11-10, yesterday afternoon at Kaimuki High School.
Kapolei (12-2) will face top-seeded Kahuku (14-0) in today's final at Central O'ahu Regional Park. Kahuku has won all four OIA titles.
"Nicole was huge for this team," Kapolei coach Dexter Lee said. "Their whole team was guarding her so it freed up T (Shantel Chong) and Al (Jamora)."
Roosevelt (12-2) went ahead 10-9 in the second overtime when Marissa Young scored on a kickout with 1:30 remaining.
Kapolei tied the score with 45 seconds left on Chong's shot that was assisted by Hagi.
Fifteen seconds later, Hagi scored the game-winner on a pass from Jamora.
"I was excited and nervous at the same time," Hagi said. "I really, really wanted to win."
After a Roosevelt timeout, the Rough Riders threw the ball wide of the goal with 22 seconds left. Kapolei got the ball back and ran its offense to finish the game.
"We just wanted to control the ball offensively," Lee said. "We've failed in the past on that. In water polo, they're (tough) on stalling. If they think you're stalling, you turn the ball over. We had to get into our offense and run it."
Roosevelt kept Hagi scoreless in the first half and went up 7-5 in the third quarter on goal by Chyla Houghtailing-Ramos with 20 seconds left.
Back-to-back goals by Hagi in a 12-second span at the beginning of the fourth quarter tied the score 7-7. Roosevelt went ahead 8-7 when Young took a pass meant for Hagi and sprinted up the pool for a breakaway goal.
Hagi tied it 8-8 with 1:12 left, but Kapolei couldn't convert in the final 36 seconds of regulation with Roosevelt down one player.
Hagi put Kapolei ahead 9-8, 30 seconds into the 3-minute overtime period. But Lana Dang forced the second overtime when she scored with 10 seconds left on a kickout that sent Kapolei goalkeeper Kelsie Polston out of the game.
"We knew a couple of their girls were in foul trouble so we wanted to try to work it off (of them)," Roosevelt coach Susan Nishioka said. "Whoever had their so-called weaker players, those were the ones who had to get the job done. The other ones were occupied by the stronger ones like Nicole."
Young led Roosevelt with four goals.
Kahuku 14, Leilehua 3: At Kaimuki, Gina Ahue scored four goals and Rebecca Fonoimoana and Minnie Whitford added three each as the top-seeded Red Raiders beat the fifth-seeded Mules in a semifinal match.
"We wanted to not come out flat and play like it was a championship game," Kahuku coach Aukai Ferguson said. "We wanted that level of intensity."
Stephanie Maddox, Elizabeth Lukefar and Jennifer Morihara each scored for the Mules (8-6), who earned their first state tourney berth by upsetting fourth-seeded Kalani Wednesday.
"We made Leilehua water polo history," Maddox said. "It definitely made us more confident and made us realize how much potential we have."

Sasha Fuller scored the game-winning goal with 1:41 left in double overtime to help Punahou defeat Kamehameha, 10-9, in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu tournament semifinals at 'Iolani.
The second-seeded Buffanblu (5-2) will face top-seeded 'Iolani (6-1) in the championship game Monday. 'Iolani beat Pac-Five, 13-2.
"At that point, I had to get the team focused," said Fuller, who led Punahou with five goals. "We still had two minutes left. We needed to press hard and we even had time to score another goal."
Hanalei Crowell led Kamehameha with three goals as the Warriors converted on several fast-break opportunities.
"Our fast breaks, when they're there, we'll put them away," Kamehameha coach Kelli Billish-Fitter said.
