Body identified as missing diver's

The body of a missing diver that was recovered on Wednesday has been identified as that of 46-year-old Theodore Chapman of Kailua, Kona.

Chapman's body was found in deep waters off Ka'u after a 24-hour search that involved the Coast Guard and Hawai'i County Fire Department. Chapman was reported missing Tuesday after he failed to surface during a dive while collecting tropical fish near Road to the Sea Beach.

At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, fire department rescue divers found the body in 115 feet of water about 150 yards offshore in the area Chapman was been seen. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital and pronounced dead at 5:56 p.m.

The police department is continuing the investigation. An autopsy has been ordered.



WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN STREAM

Emergency personnel last night recovered the body of a woman found floating in Nu'uanu Stream.

The body appeared to be that of a woman of Asian ancestry in her 60s, said Bryan Cheplic, city emergency services spokesman.

Personnel recovered the body at 6:42 p.m. in the area of River and Hotel streets, Cheplic said.

Police were investigating the death.



2 FAMILY EVENTS AT KAILUA HIGH TODAY

The Kailua High School campus will be the site of two family-oriented events today.

"A Cultural Fair" will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the gym area. There will be food, crafts, games and entertainment. A May Day program will begin at 3:30 p.m.

Over at the football field, a "Movie and a Message 'Ohana Night" will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. The first 600 people will receive a free dinner courtesy of the Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center Waimanalo Unit.

The movie "Freedom Writers" will be shown, and door prizes will be given away. People are encouraged to bring chairs, mats and pillows. The event is sponsored by the Safe Schools Task Force and UH Asian/Pacific Islanders Youth Violence Prevention Center.



ISLANDWIDE GRAFFITI PAINT-OUT TODAY

Volunteers will be gathering at Kuhio Elementary School at 8 a.m. today before fanning out across the island to wipe out graffiti left by taggers.

"Community-Wide Graffiti Paint-Out Day" runs from 8 a.m. to noon. Nearly 100 volunteers are expected to take part.

Volunteers are welcome. Kuhio Elementary is at 2759 South King St., across from the Hawaiian Humane Society.
