Two 'Bows named All-WAC in tennis

University of Hawai'i men's tennis players Andreas Weber and Sascha Heinemann were named to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team in singles, the conference announced yesterday.

Weber also was named WAC Freshman of the Year. The pair also was named to the all-WAC second team in doubles.

Weber, from Huenfeld, Germany, was 15-2 in dual matches. In January, he achieved UH's highest singles national ranking at No. 37.

Heinemann, a sophomore from Eschwege, Germany, was 13-3 in dual matches at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions. He was on the All-WAC first team last season and Freshman of the Year.

UH finished its season with a 4-0 loss to Fresno State in the WAC semifinals on April. 28.

Both players are awaiting word on whether they qualified for the NCAA Individual Championships field.


PADDLING

SANDVOLD, PA'IAINA WIN SOLO TITLES

O'ahu paddlers Mark Sandvold and Kea Pa'iaina took top honors at the Starbucks Maui Challenge solo paddling race Saturday.

Sandvold won the surfski division and was the first to finish overall with a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes, eight seconds.

The 26-mile course started at Fleming Beach, Maui, and finished at Kaunakakai, Moloka'i.

Pa'iaina won the OC-1 (one-person canoe) division with a time of 2:44:06. Danny Ching placed second in 2:44:50, and Manny Kulukulualani was third in 2:45:58.

Barry Franks placed second in the surfski division with a time of 2:41:06.

Megan Quale was the first female to finish on a surfski with a time of 3:03:41.

Margie Kawaiaea was the first female finisher in the OC-1 division with a time of 3:09:43.

The next major race for paddlers is the Starbucks Kaiwi Channel Relay on Sunday.


SAILING

UH ENDS ITS SEASON FOURTH AT DINGY EVENT

The University of Hawai'i coed sailing team ended its season with a fourth-place finish in the Pacific Coast Sailing Conference Dinghy Championship this past weekend at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Seventh-ranked Stanford won the 11-team event and with it the automatic berth into next month's ICSA Dingy National Championship.
