McKee captures gold in taekwondo event

Jarred McKee of 'Aiea captured a gold medal and Jaysen Ishida of Waikele took silver in the 34th Dutch Open Taekwondo Championships held Saturday and Sunday in Eindhove, Netherlands.

The two were part of a five-member contingent competing at the event from O'ahu Taekwondo Center.

McKee beat Mario Aguilar Repero, a member of the Spanish national team, in the male bantamweight division final. Ishida lost in the final of the junior male featherweight division to Kazakhstan's Almas Mukamanov.

Other O'ahu athletes competing were Jayme Cajimat, 'Ewa Beach; David Hubbard, Wai'anae; and Jensen Ishida, Waikele.

GYMNASTICS

HAWAI'I ATHLETES FIRST IN FLEMISH MEET

Three Hawai'i athletes won their respective divisions in the Flemish Double Mini-Trampoline Championships in Schelle, Belgium, this month.

Matt Moniz, a 20-year-old freshman at Leeward Community College, won the senior elite open men's division; Spencer Dupio, a 16-year-old sophomore at Roosevelt High School, claimed the junior elite boys division; and Kelsen Onigama, a 12-year-old sixth-grader at Kalakaua Middle School captured the "miniemen jongens" division.

Nani Vercruyssen, a 15-year-old freshman at Roosevelt, was eliminated from the finals after crashing and finished 12th in her division; and Mia Vercruyssen, a 17-year-old junior at Roosevelt, placed 13th in the junior girls division.

RIFORD EARNS NRA ALL-AMERICA HONORS

Simone Riford, a Punahou School alum, was an honorable mention National Rifle Association All-American pick.

The Texas Christian University student recently finished in the top 10 at the Junior Olympic National Shooting Championships.

TENNIS

BYUH COACH PORTER GETS NATIONAL HONOR

David Porter, the men's and women's tennis coach at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i, was one of three people to receive the Tennis Educational Merit Award from the International Tennis Hall of Fame last week in Tucson, Ariz.

Porter, who guided the men's and women's BYUH teams to national titles in the 2002-03 seasons, is also a chairman of the USPTA's Player Development Advisory Council.

The other honorees were Barbara Fackel of Rock Island, Ill., and Marc Safran of San Francisco.
