Falun Gong, GM crop films are weekend offerings

Advertiser Staff

Two very different films in very different venues offer alternatives to the multiplex movies this weekend:

  • "Sandstorm," an independent film by Michael Mahonen, focuses on persecution of Falun Gong practitioners. It's the story of a policeman and his dying wife, stranded in a massive sandstorm in China. As the storm rages, he wrestles with his conscience as he reflects on his part in the torture and brainwashing of followers of Falun Gong, a spiritual movement banned in the nation that maintains strict controls over all religions.

"Sandstorm" will screen at 3 p.m. Sunday and 7 p.m. Monday at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Architecture Building, Room 205. A representative from New Tang Dynasty Films, which produced the movie, will answer questions. It's free. 956-8164.

  • "Islands at Risk," produced by Earthjustice and Na Maka O Ka 'Aina, looks at the genetic engineering of crops in Hawai'i.

It screens at 6:30 p.m. today at Bliss A Happy Place for Diabetics, 87-132 Farrington Highway, Wai'anae, 696-7700; and at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Patagonia store at the North Shore Marketplace, Hale'iwa, 637-1245. It's free.

The screenings are presented by GMO-Free O'ahu. Q&A sessions after each screening will feature Moloka'i activist Walter Ritte, Kona coffee farmer Nancy Redfeather and Big Island taro farmer Jerry Konanui.
