State proposes artificial reef

An artificial reef offshore of 'Ewa at Kalaeloa has been proposed by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Aquatic Resources.
The division has mapped out a 224-acre area nearly devoid of coral and valuable marine habitat. It has prepared a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the project. That report also covers the first increment of artificial reef within the site boundaries.
It will incorporate at least two piles of Z-blocks totaling some 700 to 800 blocks that will be used to cover a seafloor area of about 8,000 square feet.
The public has until April 23 to comment.
