In a game where offense was at a premium, Ashlee Dela Cruz found her sweet spot on the floor in the third quarter and her two consecutive 3-pointers keyed Kapolei's victory over 'Aiea.
Dela Cruz's 3-pointers from the right wing put the Hurricanes ahead, and Tamara Satcher scored eight of her 15 points in the fourth period as host Kapolei beat 'Aiea, 35-23, last night.
Kapolei improved to 2-0 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association's Red West Division; 'Aiea dropped to 2-1.
Dela Cruz's first 3-pointer tied it at 14 with 3:28 left in the third. The second — which came after Cassidy Calio hustled for an offensive rebound — gave the Hurricanes a 17-14 advantage with 1:15 remaining.
"Ashlee has been in a slump," Kapolei coach Jesse Baugh said. "Tonight she hit two 3s when the game was close. It gave our girls a boost."
Dela Cruz's first 3-pointer was the Hurricanes' first field goal since 56 seconds remaining in the first quarter — a span of nearly 13:30.
'Aiea tied it at 19 after a field goal by Capri Holiona with 5:49 left in the game, but Satcher sparked an 8-0 run with a field goal, assist and four free throws.
"I just wanted to step up," Satcher said. "We wanted to play our game."
In the fourth quarter, Kapolei hit 11 of 15 free-throw attempts to keep 'Aiea at bay.
"We worked hard on free throws during our bye week," Baugh said. "We would shoot 100 free throws, 50 free throws, 25 free throws. We missed a lot of them during the preseason."
The game was played at a slow pace with each team playing an aggressive man-to-man defense.
'Aiea had averaged 43 points in its previous two games, so Baugh said he liked the tempo.
"We wanted to take time off the clock and slow the game down," he said.
Kapolei made only 9 of 26 field-goal attempts and committed 23 turnovers.
In the second quarter, the Hurricanes went 0 of 5 from the field and committed 10 turnovers. Their only points came on two free throws by Satcher with 3 seconds remaining.
Baugh was so frustrated he kicked a water bottle against the base of the bleachers with 2 minutes left before halftime and it slid behind the Na Ali'i bench.
"I was upset. We gave up the ball five times in a row. The water bottle was in my way so I kicked it," Baugh said.
Holiona scored 11 points to lead 'Aiea, which was 10 of 38 from the field and committed 18 turnovers.
