Radford senior Gary Satterwhite had an inauspicious start to the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference Western Division season, scoring just six points in a 44-43 overtime loss at home to Leilehua.
But since that game, Satterwhite caught fire and never really cooled off, capping the season by being named OIA Red West Player of the Year for the second straight season.
Satterwhite, a smooth, sharp-shooting 6-foot-3 senior forward, averaged 17.9 points per game, including 25 in a loss to Campbell in the regular-season finale. The Rams finished third in the West with an 8-4 record, but eventually earned their first state tournament berth since 2000.
Satterwhite also scored 24 points in a 50-47 victory over Campbell in their first regular-season meeting, had 23 points in a win over Kapolei, and 21 each against Mililani and Wai'anae.
After the opener against Leilehua, Satterwhite's lowest scoring output was 14 points, which he scored against Pearl City (twice) and Mililani.
In 22 regular-season games the past two seasons, Satterwhite scored in double figures 21 times.
Satterwhite, the only repeat first-team selection, is joined on the OIA Red West all-star first team by Campbell's Mike Makinano, Wai'anae's Ramsey Beers, Leilehua's Art Laurel and Mililani's Scott Burns.
Makinano is a high-scoring 6-foot junior guard who scored a season-high 23 points — including four 3-pointers — in a victory over Leilehua.
Beers is a 6-foot senior forward, Laurel a 6-2 junior forward and Burns a 6-3 junior center.
Mililani's Hiram Akina was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Trojans to a 12-0 record and regular-season championship. He also won Coach of the Year honors last season.
