When the time came to vote for a Player of the Year in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu, two big men stood out for coaches casting their ballot.

Punahou's Spencer McLachlin and Saint Louis' Scott Smith — both 6-foot-7 senior posts — shared top honors and were named Co-Players of the Year.

McLachlin was a steady force who averaged 13 points per game and helped the Buffanblu (11-1) win their first ILH championship since 1999. He especially came through in two pivotal games, one in the middle of the season and one at the end.

Just four days after a stunning 74-63 home defeat to 'Iolani that created a three-way tie for first place, McLachlin scored a game-high 23 points to help visiting Punahou rally past Saint Louis, 67-53. Then, in the regular-season finale, he scored 11 points, grabbed 14 rebounds, blocked four shots and made two steals to help the Buffanblu defeat 'Iolani, 60-46, snapping the Raiders' six-year stranglehold on the ILH title.

Smith was nearly unstoppable all season for the Crusaders. He averaged 15.3 points per game, scoring in double figures in all but one regular-season contest.

In one crucial weekend, Smith had 15 points, eight rebounds and three steals in a 49-39 victory over Kamehameha, then scored nine points, grabbed seven rebounds, made five steals and blocked a shot in a 51-48 win over 'Iolani — Saint Louis' first over the Raiders since 2001.

McLachlin and Smith are joined on the ILH's all-star first team by Punahou guard Miah Ostrowski, 'Iolani guards Case Miyahira and Ryan Dung, Kamehameha guard Rykin Enos and Saint Louis forward Solomona Aigamaua.

Ostrowski, who made the ILH all-star first team in each of his four seasons, averaged 19 points per game. Enos also is a repeat first-team selection.

Punahou's Dan Hale was named Coach of the Year in his first season at the Buffanblu helm.
