Flags will fly at half-staff

Advertiser Staff

State flags at state and county buildings will be flown at half-staff in honor of two former state elected officials who recently passed away, the governor's office said.

State flags will be flown at half-staff today in honor of former Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Thomas K. Kaulukukui Sr., who died March 9.

Kaulukukui served on the OHA board from 1980 to 1994.

On Thursday, state flags will be flown at half-staff in honor of former state Rep. Peter Aduja, who died Feb. 19.

The flag will be flown from sunrise to sunset on the respective day of interment for Kaulukukui and Aduja, a governor's office news release said.

Gov. Linda Lingle will also order state flags to fly at half-staff in honor of OHA trustee Linda Dela Cruz, who died March 15, once funeral arrangements are announced by family members.

TRAIL REOPENS AFTER TREE REMOVAL

HILO, Hawai'i — The Department of Land and Natural Resources yesterday reopened the Muliwai Trail following completion of maintenance work on the trail and the Waimanu Valley Campground.

The area was closed after a tree fell across the halfway point of the trail in February. The fallen tree was removed along with others that were deemed hazardous. Crews also carried out general maintenance.

Camping permits for the campground are being processed at the Hilo DLNR Forestry and Wildlife office at (808) 974-4221.
