A 34-year-old Mountain View pedestrian died early yesterday morning after he was hit late Friday night by a hit-and-run driver on North Kulani Road, one mile north of the Hawai'i Belt Road.

The Hawai'i County Police Department has opened a negligent-homicide investigation and is asking for the public's help in providing information.

Police said the man was walking north on North Kulani Road at around 10:30 p.m. Friday when he was hit by a vehicle traveling in the same direction. The driver fled the scene.

The man was pronounced dead at the Hilo Medical Center at 2:38 a.m. yesterday.

Police are looking for a Chevrolet with damage to the right headlight area. They said the vehicle may be blue, but investigators were unable to determine if it was a sedan, pickup or SUV.

Anyone with information is asked to call Officer Norbert Serrao at (808) 961-8118, or the police nonemergency number at (808) 935-3311. Anonymous calls can be made to Crime Stoppers in Hilo at 961-8300 or Kona at 329-8181.
