Mowers boosts Hilo over Chicago State, 9-4

Robby Mowers' bases-clearing double in the seventh inning snapped a 4-4 tie and propelled Hawai'i-Hilo to a 9-4 win over Chicago State in a non-conference baseball game last night at Wong Stadium.

Mowers also hit an RBI double and David Chu led off the bottom of the first with a home run as the Vulcans improved to 2-16.

Mowers, Chu, A.J. Satele and Jon Vitale each had two hits for Hilo.

Luke Grow and Jonathon Wilson had two hits apiece for the Cougars (0-12).

Reliever Dustin Gilmore earned the win, working 3 2/3 innings and allowing two hits and one run while striking out two.


SOFTBALL

UH TOPS BOSTON COLLEGE

Kate Robinson and Brandi Peiler hit consecutive home runs in a four-run first to lead the University of Hawai'i softball team to a 5-1 victory over Boston College last night at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Robinson's three-run drive and Peiler's second homer in as many games were enough to support Justine Smethurst (6-3).

Smethurst allowed eight hits and two walks in pitching a complete game.

Both teams enter today's start of the 2007 Hawaiian Airlines Spring Fling Tournament. UH plays Pacific at 5 p.m. and Liberty at approximately 7.

SEA WARRIORS SWEEP

Nicole Kalakau's two-run homer capped a six-run sixth-inning rally as Hawai'i Pacific beat Notre Dame de Namur, 8-4, yesterday to complete a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep at Sea Warrior Field.

Kalakau also hit a two-run double and Sherise Musquiz pitched one-hit ball over 5 1/3 innings of relief for the Sea Warriors (9-1, 2-0). Bria De Lorenzo homered for the Argos (7-24, 2-6).

In the opener, Kalakau hit a two-RBI double and an RBI single, and Krystal Plunkett added two RBIs as HPU won, 9-1, in a game shortened to 4 1/2 innings. Clerisse Lemke and Courtney Kessell teamed on a four-hitter.


SURFING

IRONS OUSTED

Kaua'i's Bruce Irons was eliminated in the fourth round of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast today off Coolangata, Australia.

Australia's Joel Parkinson defeated Irons, 19.10-7.83, in 5- to 6-foot waves at Snapper Rocks.

Mick Fanning defeated fellow Australian Bede Durbidge, 16.17-12.00, to capture the title of the ASP's first meet of 2007.


GOLF

UH FINISHES SIXTH

The University of Hawai'i women's golf team shot a final-round 307 to finish sixth among 14 teams yesterday in the San Jose State Spartan Invitational at the Almaden Country Club at San Jose, Calif.

San Jose State won with an 877 total, with Colorado and California sharing second at 892.

Xyra Suyetsugu was the top Rainbow Wahine, finishing in a tie for 13th with 74—224. UC Irvine's Selanee Henderson won with 70—210.

SWIMMING/DIVING



'BOWS AT NATIONALS

Three members of the University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team will compete in the NCAA Championships, starting tomorrow at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Senior Nicole Mackey is making her fourth trip the nationals. She posted A (automatic) qualifying times in the 100 backstroke, 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley at the Western Athletic Conference Championship in San Antonio, Texas, Feb. 14-17.

The Newport Beach, Calif., native posted the 20th fastest time in the country in the 100 backstroke (54.38 seconds), 26th best time in the 200 backstroke (1:57.72) and 16th best time in the 200 individual medley (2:00.14).

Rainbow Wahine divers Megan Farrow (3-meter springboard) and Emma Friesen (1-meter springboard) qualified for the NCAAs this past weekend at the Zone E Diving Regionals in Oklahoma City, Okla.
