Grand Canyon beats Hilo

Tate Ford and Giancarlo Silverstri hit two-run doubles in successive at-bats to spice a four-run seventh inning rally that lifted Grand Canyon over host Hawai'i-Hilo, 7-3, yesterday in a non-conference baseball game at Wong Stadium.

Silverstri batted 3 for 5, and Josiah Ziegler earned a save with two scoreless innings of one-hit ball for the Antelopes (10-6). Starting pitcher Patrick Lawler got the win, working seven innings while allowing four hits and three runs. He struck out six and walked one.

David Chu's two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth gave the Vulcans (1-16) a 3-1 lead.

Grand Canyon, which is from Phoenix, Ariz., closed to 3-2 on Matt Henne's sacrifice fly in the fifth.

Ford put the Antelopes ahead to stay with his one-out, bases-loaded double in the seventh.


SOFTBALL

HILO SWEEPS PAIR

Meghan Jost had two hits and three RBIs, and Leo Sing Chow and Brittany Dock each contributed two hits and two RBIs as host Hawai'i-Hilo beat Grand Canyon, 9-1, to complete a Pacific West Conference doubleheader sweep at Honoka'a County Park.

Sing Chow's RBI double with two outs in the bottom of the fifth ended the game by mercy rule and made a winner of Sarah Weisskopf, who scattered six hits while striking out one and walking none.

In the opener, Tracy Ryan pitched a three-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks, and Charity Senas had two hits and two RBIs to lead the Vulcans to a 5-1 win.

Hilo improved to 16-2 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest. Randi Johns had three hits and an RBI in the two games for Grand Canyon, which fell to 11-12 and 2-2.


BASKETBALL

CU DEFEATS UHH

Brittnee Fonnesbeck amassed 34 points and 17 rebounds as Chaminade defeated host Hawai'i-Hilo, 74-67, yesterday in the season finale for both women's teams at Honoka'a Armory gym.

Desiree Staples added 15 points and Samantha Saito 13 for the Silverswords (5-18). Saito's jumper with 2:41 left in the half put Chaminade ahead to stay at 29-27, and Staples hit four free throws and Fonnesbeck two in a 6-0 run that gave the Silverswords a 66-56 lead with 1:06 remaining. Fonnesbeck was 19 of 21 from the free-throw line.

Amy Kaaiakamanu had 16 points and 11 rebounds, Sheila Azevedo added 15 points, and Chrystal Hodson contributed 13 rebounds and nine points for the Vulcans (6-18).


VOLLEYBALL

HAWAI'I HOSTS ARIZONA

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team will host a spring exhibition match March 15 against Arizona.

All-American Jamie Houston leads five returning starters from last year's Rainbow Wahine squad that reached the NCAA Regional final in Honolulu, but lost to UCLA to finish 29-6.

Hawai'i's Kanoe Kamana'o and Sarah Mason, who completed their eligibility last season, are expected to participate in the exhibition.

The Wildcats finished 13-17 overall, 4-14 in the Pac-10 Conference.

Admission is $10 lower bowl, $6 upper bowl, $5 senior citizens, $3 UH students and ages 4-18.
