Hawai'i's Moore tops Beachley

Hawai'i's Carissa Moore did it again. Days after knocking off world champion Layne Beachley of Australia in the first round of the Roxy Pro women's contest in Coolangatta, Australia, Moore did it again today in the third round, 15.66 to 9.34.
"I'm super stoked, but I was honored just to be out there with Layne," Moore said. "She's such a great person, so I'm just excited."
Moore posted the highest single-wave score of the day, a 9.33 in her third-round matchup against Beachley.
"I can't find any excuses for what happened to me today," Beachley said. "I'm not going to beat myself up too hard about it."
Moore will square off against another Hawai'i surfer, Megan Abubo, in the quarterfinals. Abubo beat Australia's Samantha Cornish in the third round, 10.16 to 6.96. Hawai'i's Melanie Bartels lost in the third round to Rebecca Woods of Australia, 11.00 to 10.93.
DIVING
FRICK WINS 3-METER TITLE
University of Hawai'i diver Magnus Frick captured the men's 3-meter springboard title and teammate Mats Wiktorsson took fifth as both advanced to the NCAA Championships yesterday at the Zone E Diving Regional held at the Oklahoma City (Okla.) Community College pool.
Frick, who was trailing Brigham Young's Brandon Watson by almost five points following the preliminaries, scored 372.90 in his second six-dive list to catapult past Watson and take first place with 749.90 points.
Watson finished second with 733.05 points.
The fifth-place showing by Wiktorsson assured him one of the nine berths available at the Zone E Regional joining Frick at the 2007 NCAA Men's Division I Swimming and Diving Championship March 15 to 17 in Minneapolis.
Wiktorsson competes on the platform today.
In the women's competition yesterday, UH diver Emma Friesen advanced to next week's NCAA Championships after finishing second on the 1-meter springboard event, also at the Oklahoma City (Okla.) Community College pool.
Friesen, who was also second after the preliminaries, posted a score of 582.80 for the two combined six-dive lists.
The NCAA Women's Division I Swimming and Diving Championship is March 8 to 10 in Minneapolis. Swimmer Nicole Mackey will also compete for UH.
COLLEGE BASKETBALL
BYUH MEN, WOMEN WIN
Eric Boyce scored 14 points and Paul Peterson and Corey Nielson each added 10 as the Brigham Young-Hawai'i men's basketball team beat Hawai'i Pacific, 72-51, last night in a Pacific West Conference game at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
BYUH (20-7, 12-3 Pac West) clinched the sixth 20-win season in Ken Wagner's 16-year tenure.
Mickey Wheeler led HPU (10-17, 4-11) with 10 points.
The NCAA Division II tournament field will be announced tomorrow and the tournament begins Thursday.
In the women's game, Latoya Wily scored 30 points and grabbed 16 rebounds, and Kayla Burningham added 21 points as Brigham Young-Hawai'i rolled over Hawai'i Pacific, 76-46, in a Pacific West Conference women's basketball game last night at the Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.
Wily, who had a team-high three blocks, went 10 for 14 from the field and 8 of 10 from the free-throw line for BYUH (13-12, 11-4 Pac West).
Shannon Miyashiro led HPU (2-25, 2-13) with 14 points.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
UH-HILO, PATTEN SPLIT
Roby Mowers had four hits, including a game-winning, two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to lift University of Hawai'i-Hilo to a 7-6 victory over Patten University in the first game of a doubleheader at Wong Stadium yesterday.
The Oakland, Calif., school (6-13) beat UH-Hilo (1-14) in the nightcap, 13-9.
