Peiler's slam lifts UH over Kent State

Advertiser Staff

Brandi Peiler hit a grand slam with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Hawai'i defeated Kent State, 4-2, last night in the final game on the opening day of the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine (13-3) struggled against Kent State (5-4) pitcher Brittney Robinson, who struck out 13 and allowed just three hits. But Clare Warwick singled with one out in the sixth, and Kaulana Gould and Audrey Andrade later walked before Peiler powered her homer to left.

Earlier, Melissa Rice pitched a one-hitter as Oregon (17-1) defeated Hawai'i, 7-1.

Gould singled for UH's lone hit while Sari-Jane Jenkins and Jennifer Sailing each had two hits and two RBIs for Oregon.

IRONS LOSES IN OPENER

World champion Kelly Slater of Florida and former world champ Andy Irons of Kaua'i lost in their first-round heats yesterday but remained in competition of the Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast surfing contest.

The event was held in 3- to 4-foot waves at Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta, Australia.

Australia's Julian Wilson, who gained entry as a wild card, wasted little time in his inaugural opportunity against the world's best by beating Slater, the eight-time Foster's ASP World Tour champion.

Slater was relegated to Round 2 while Wilson was seeded directly into Round 3.

Irons finished second in his three-man heat to South Africa's Greg Emslie, and also must compete in Round 2.
