NANAKULI
Hula mound to be rededicated
Advertiser Staff
Students and educators at Ka Waihona o Ka Na'auao Public Charter School in Nanakuli will today rededicate an outdoor hula mound built in 1959, when the school was known as Nanaikapono Elementary.
In December, school staff, parents and volunteers from Halau Mapuana Leo and Hawaiian Electric Co. began reviving the mound, which over the years had fallen into disrepair.
They replanted 700 salt-tolerant shrubs and grass, and put in a new sprinkler system to keep the mound green.
Guests of honor will be a group of alumni from the ninth-grade Class of '59 who built the original mound.
