"Volcanoes of the Deep Sea," a 2005 documentary that tracks a team of scientists on their odyssey to an underwater world, screens 5 p.m. Sunday, at Spalding Auditorium at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa. The expedition dives 8,000 feet to where the Pacific's mid-ocean ridge, an otherworldly place, nurtures a habitat for towering underwater chimneys, giant tubeworms, predators and sulfur-loving life. It's an extreme environment that may hold the key to understanding the emergence of life on earth. "Volcanoes" is followed by "Exotic Terrain: Geological Discoveries in the Pacific Northwest," about coral reef fossils turning up in in eastern Oregon. The program lasts 105 minutes.
