Longs continues Hawai'i stores

Longs Drug Stores' Hawai'i operations will not be affected by the company's decision to close 31 stores in four Western states this year.
The store closures will eliminate the drug store operator's presence in Colorado, Washington and Oregon, where the company has a total of 23 stores. California will lose eight locations.
Longs, based in Walnut Creek, Calif., said it plans to open or move as many as 30 outlets and remodel 40 more.
UH RESEARCH BROUGHT IN $2M
The University of Hawai'i spent nearly $600 million on research from 2003-05, but generated just over $2 million in licensing revenues and royalties, according to the Association of University Technology Managers.
Information provided by UH showed that in fiscal 2006 royalty income fell 13 percent to $899,000. Royalty income likely will fall further this year because the university has lost patent protection for a cancer detection antibody, according to the university.
FRANCHISOR BUYS BACK RE/MAX
The California-based franchisee of real estate brokerage firm RE/MAX in Hawai'i and California is selling the business back to franchisor RE/MAX International.
The Denver-based franchisor said it expects its purchase of RE/MAX of California & Hawaii will be concluded by mid-April. A price was not disclosed.
The Hawai'i RE/MAX operations have been part of the regional franchise since 1992.
