Getting through the Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball schedule is rough, and to win the championship takes toughness.
It helps to have a tough leader, and that's what Punahou had in junior pitcher Jeeter Ishida. His clutch play helped the Buffanblu win their second ILH title in three years and earned him Player of the Year honors after a vote of league coaches.
Ishida went 6-0 as a starting pitcher, including a two-hitter against Mid-Pacific and four-hitters against MPI and Saint Louis. His earned run average was 1.69.
Ishida struck out 34 batters in 41 innings and also earned a save.
At the plate, he batted .306 with one home run and nine RBIs.
Punahou and 'Iolani led the way with four players each selected to the ILH all-star first team. Ishida was joined by teammates Reece Kiriu (second base), Josh Bninski (shortstop) and Paul Snieder (utility).
'Iolani was represented by first baseman Reyn Nagamine, third baseman Case Miyahira, outfielder Lionel Fujioka and pitcher Kelsey Outram.
Kamehameha placed outfielders Mitch Kauweloa and Waylen Sing Chow, and designated hitter John Worthington.
Mid-Pacific catcher Aaron Fujiki and Damien pitcher Duncan Ebert round out the first team.
'Iolani's Dean Yonamine was named Coach of the Year after leading the Raiders (12-5) to a second-place finish; they were the only ILH team to beat Punahou.
