Iz keeps inspiring us, with enduring magic

StoryChat: Comment on this story

Few sons of Hawai'i left behind a spiritual imprint at the end of their life the way that Israel Kamakawiwo'ole did.

For his family and loved ones, the enduring presence of his voice and his music must bring some comfort. For other Islanders, as well as his fans worldwide, it's a gift.

Marking the 10th anniversary of his death at age 38, Mountain Apple Co. has planned a tribute to the memory of "Bruddah Iz," one of the musicians who recorded on its label. The Advertiser is part of that tribute, with today's publication of a commemorative section.

What's amazing is how little promotion this gentle man required to weave his magic, creating a following that only multiplied upon his passing. It was the purity of his voice and the heartfelt sentiment in his songs that won over the audience locally.

That same universal appeal drew listeners around the globe into the fold. Witness the international success of the "Over the Rainbow/Wonderful World" medley. In December, rock devotees heard a rendition of Kamakawiwo'ole's "Hawai'i 78" performed by Pearl Jam before a packed Aloha Stadium crowd.

Iz's music has staying power. His success, during his lifetime and afterward, hints at potential achievement for other Hawaiian musicians, whether they're performing the more traditional art or applying its influence to modern styles.

The tribute to Iz, then, becomes less an occasion for sadness at the loss and more a cause to celebrate a truly Hawaiian artistic triumph.
