Metzger, Lambert in 'elite 8'

Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert advanced to the "elite eight" at the $600,000 Henkel Grand Chelem yesterday in Paris. The first of five majors on the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour continues through tomorrow when the men's and women's medal matches will be held.
The first of two rounds single-elimination play were completed yesterday. Lambert and Metzger, seeded 14th, upset the eighth-seeded Chinese team of Penggen Wu and Linyin Xu, 21-18, 21-15.
Spain's Pablo Herrera and Raul Mesa, the 2002 SWATCH-FIVB World champions for players under the age of 21, pulled the elimination bracket's biggest upset. The 21st-seeded Spaniards beat defending champions Marcio Araujo and Fabio Magalhaes of Brazil, 21-16, 16-21, 17-15.
Herrera and Mesa play Metzger and Lambert tomorrow. The Honolulu team was fifth in Paris last July, while the Spaniards failed to qualify for the main draw.
MIXED MARTIAL ARTS
PENN, PULVER WEIGH IN
Hilo's BJ Penn and Iowa's Jens Pulver made weight yesterday for the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 5 Finale mixed martial arts card.
The bout is scheduled for tonight in Las Vegas.
Penn weighed 155 1/2 pounds, and Pulver was 152. The limit for the lightweight division is 155, but fighters are allowed to be one pound over.
Penn and Pulver served as opposing coaches for The Ultimate Fighter 5 reality series, which has been airing on Spike TV for the past three months.
Penn's record is 10-4-1; Pulver is 21-7-1, including a majority decision victory over Penn in 2002.
Tonight's card will be televised nationally on Spike TV, beginning at 6 p.m. (Hawai'i time).
Andy Wang, a University of Hawai'i graduate, is scheduled to face Georgia's Cole Miller on the undercard.
GOLF
CHING LEADS QUALIFIER
Alex Ching, Lorens Chan and TJ Kua all shot under par yesterday at the U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier, held at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.
Ching fired a 4-under 68 and is a shot ahead of Chan and Kua. Alika Bell, Cory Oride and David Fink share fourth at 74.
The final round starts this morning at 6:30. The top two advance to the national championship. The girls play their 18-hole qualifier today.
The 59th U.S. Girls Junior is at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Washington. The 60th U.S. Junior Amateur is at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo. Both run July 23 to 28.
FOOTBALL
MOCK ON PRACTICE SQUAD
Former University of Hawai'i wideout Chad Mock will open the Canadian Football League season on the B.C. Lions' practice squad, according to Jon Nielsen, a CFL consultant.
As a member of the five-player practice squad, Mock will receive a stipend as well as free room and board.
Mock, a Farrington High graduate, was a backup receiver for the Warriors last season. He is competing at wideout and slotback for the Lions.
