New Oahu building code OK'd

Advertiser Staff

Honolulu's building code has been upgraded to recognize modern architectural and structural design standards, construction materials and technology changes over the past 10 years.

Officials said the new code:

  • Permits much larger floor spaces than the old code, thereby reducing construction costs.

  • Updates seismic and wind requirements.

  • Simplifies building codes for single-family or duplex units.

  • Eliminates a requirement for smoke control systems in high-rises.

  • Recognizes the introduction of new construction materials called "metal composite materials."

Honolulu is the first county in Hawai'i to adopt the new code, which conforms with the 2003 International Building Code and International Residential Code, with local amendments.

The updated code was approved by the City Council and signed into law by Mayor Mufi Hannemann on Wednesday.

Hannemann said the updated code represents a partnership between the city and many individuals and organizations that represent engineers, architects, Realtors, contractors, bankers, property managers and others.
