$100,000 gift for ditch repair
Advertiser Staff
AT&T Foundation presented Big Island Mayor Harry Kim with a $100,000 grant yesterday to help restore and preserve the Kohala Ditch in North Kohala.
The ditch's flumes and tunnels sustained severe damage during the Oct. 15 earthquakes, with water flows cut from about 10 million gallons per day to about 500,000 gallons, choking off water to farms, ranches and dairies.
Federal funds totaling $2.2 million have been provided for Kohala Ditch repairs and assistance to farmers for quake-related damages, and Kohala Ditch will also be included in pending state and federal earthquake- recovery funding.
