"Nobody wants to feel like a third wheel, getting in the way," writes Lichtenstein, who has learned the ropes through his wife's two births. The little handbook is filled with details ("what her body is going through" during labor), practical advice (a menu of phrases to help mom concentrate: "Trust your body, it knows what to do") and humorous man-view asides. His parting words: "Whatever you do, don't do what I did — lie in her bed the morning after, eating her breakfast, while she packs the bags."
