HPU basketball teams sign players

Advertiser Staff

The Hawai'i Pacific men's and women's basketball programs have each announced the signing of two players for next season.

Miodrag Radojevic, a 6-foot-10 post player, and Justonn Smith, a 6-2 guard, will join the Sea Warrior men's team.

Radojevic, a native of Belgrade, Serbia, is transferring from the University of Utah.

"(He) gives us an inside presence that is essential," said HPU coach Darren Vorderbruegge.

Smith played at San Jose State the past two seasons after a standout career at Woodside High in San Francisco, where he averaged 17 points and seven rebounds, and was a four-time All-Peninsula Athletic League selection.

"He brings a level of quickness and explosiveness that is important to successful basketball," Vorderbruegge said.

The Sea Warrior women will also gain a post player and guard in 6-foot-1 Angela Spence and 5-7 Karras Blate.

Spence averaged 6.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for Santa Barbara City College, where she played the last two seasons.

"She will provide rebounding and a defensive presence," said HPU coach Jeff Harada.

Blate was a three-time all-league MVP at Oakhurst, Calif. before earning All-Central Valley Conference honors the past two seasons at Reedley College.

"She shoots the ball extremely well, and her ability to knock down shots from 3-point range will have her competing for minutes right away," Harada said.

SUMMER CLINICS SET

A summer clinic schedule is set for the Wahine Volleyball Academy, designed for players 10 and older. The two-hour afternoon clinics are run by current University of Hawai'i staff, and current and former players. They take place at Manoa District Park (2721 Ka'aipu Ave.).

Cost is $45 at the door, $40 to pre-register or $150 to pre-pay for any four clinics. Pre-payment is encouraged to guarantee a small player-to-coach ratio.

Focus of the clinics is customized training by position for all levels, with "necessary fundamentals" for beginners and specific biomechanical analysis for elite athletes.

Remaining dates are today, June 17, June 24, July 22, July 29, Aug. 5 and Aug. 19. More clinics are planned for the fall.
