Three fall short at U.S. Open qualifying

Three Hawai'i golfers failed to qualify for the U.S. Open, after coming up short in sectional qualifying yesterday in Murrietta, Calif.
Alex Ching, a Punahou junior, shot 74-74-148 at the Bear Creek Golf Club; Casey Watabu, the 2006 Public Links champion from Kaua'i, shot 81-78-159; and Dugal Milne, a pro at Makena on Maui, shot 75-85-160.
The top four from Bear Creek qualified for the U.S. Open, which will be June 14 to 17 at Oakmont, Pa., Country Club.
Kevin Sutherland, of Sacramento, Calif., was the medalist at Bear Creek, shooting 65-72-137.
U.S. AMATEUR ENTRY DEADLINE TOMORROW
Entry deadline for the U.S. Junior Amateur and U.S. Girls Junior Amateur championships is tomorrow at 11 a.m. HST.
Entries are available at usga.org. Sectional qualifying for both will be at Wailua Golf Course later this month. Entry fee is $25.
The national amateur championships are open to boys who will not turn 18 until after July 28 and have a handicap of 6.4 or better, and girls who will not turn 18 until after July 28 and have a handicap of 18.4 or better.
Boys qualifying (36 holes) is June 22 and 23, and girls qualifying (18 holes) June 23 at Wailua.
The USGA Junior Championship will be at Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Mo., July 23 to 28. The USGA Girls Junior Championship will be at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash., July 23 to 28.

THREE UH PLAYERS NAMED ALL-AMERICA
University of Hawai'i softball players Kate Robinson and Clare Warwick have been selected to the 2007 Easton All-America first team, while teammate Tyleen Tausaga was named to the second-team.
Hawai'i was also named one of four Easton Schools of the Year for its success on the field.
The 'Bows compiled an overall record of 50-13 and won the Western Athletic Conference regular season title with a 16-2 mark. Hawai'i earned an at-large bid to its seventh NCAA Regionals and advanced to the school's first ever Super Regional in Knoxville, Tenn.
The same three Rainbow Wahine players were also named to the NFCA All-American team last week with Robinson and Warwick on the second team and Tausaga on the third team.
Hawai'i now has 11 Easton All-American selections in the program's 23 years.

LAM UPSETS TOP SEED; FALLS IN SECOND ROUND
Honolulu's Chris Lam upset the top seed in a pair of tiebreakers, but fell in the second round of the $50,000 Sunset Moulding Challenger Sunday in Yuba City, Calif.
Lam, who played on UCLA's 2005 NCAA Championship team, beat top-seeded Todd Widom in the opening round, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (7). The match lasted 2 1/2 hours in 90-plus-degree heat. Widom is ranked 332nd in the world. Ninety minutes later, Lam was beaten by Phillip King, 6-0, 4-6, 6-0.
Lam's next event is the $15,000 Recoating West Futures in Loomis, Calif. Qualifying begins Saturday.
