HAWAI'I BRIEFS
Search ends for missing fisherman

Advertiser Staff

Rescuers suspended their search yesterday for a 60-year-old fisherman who was last seen near the Halona Blowhole, in an area called Bamboo Ridge.

The Coast Guard and Fire Department had searched on water and by air Thursday and Friday for the man, who apparently fell into the water.

The man was described as being 5 feet 7 and weighing 135 pounds.

The Coast Guard and Fire Department used helicopters and boats to look for the man, combing the shoreline between Makapu'u Point and Hanauma Bay.

They also searched waters up to five miles offshore, officials said.

COPTER RESCUES CRASHED PARAGLIDER

Firefighters rescued a paraglider yesterday who crash-landed onto a mountainside above Pali Highway.

The man was not injured, but had to be rescued with a Honolulu Fire Department helicopter.

The man crashed about noon, after taking off from Makapu'u. He held onto a tree on a steep mountainside until rescuers arrived.

2 NEW DEPUTIES AT PUBLIC SAFETY

Gov. Linda Lingle has appointed two new deputy directors to the Department of Public Safety, putting in place a full senior management team for the department.

Last month, the governor named Clayton Frank as interim public safety director. Jim Propotnick remains as deputy director for law enforcement.

Johnson currently is the paroles and pardons administrator for the Hawai'i Paroling Authority, a position he has held since 2001.

Festerling has been serving as acting deputy director of administration since May 7. He started his career as a deputy sheriff for the Judiciary in 1983 and has nearly 24 years of service with the state.

WARNING ISSUED ON MAILED SCAM

Big Island police are warning the public about a mail scam aimed at persuading Hawai'i County residents to give away money.

A company calling itself Meltec Financial Management out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is sending a letter along with an enclosed cashier's check for more than $2,000.

The letter claims that the recipient has won $50,000 and asks the recipient to cash the enclosed check and send it back to pay for "tax and administrative" expenses.

The check is bogus.

Police ask anyone who receives a similar suspicious solicitation to call the Police Department's nonemergency number at 935-3311.

BEACH PARK TO GET $500K UPGRADE

Improvements to Mai Poina 'Oe Ia'u Beach Park (also known as "Memorial Park" or "Windsurfing Beach") on Maui will begin tomorrow and continue for approximately 3 1/2 months.

During construction, the pavilion area will be closed to the public. However, portable toilets will be available on site.

The nearly $500,000 in improvements to the three-acre park include demolition of the existing pavilion and construction of a new pavilion with restrooms, landscaping and parking.

The contractor, Maui Master Builders, will erect dust screens beginning tomorrow.

Mai Poina 'Oe Ia'u Beach Park is in North Kihei off South Kihei Road.
