Citizenship Awardees role models for us all

Beyond its lyrical value, there is great truth behind the saying: "The children are the future." It is for them, after all, that our city and state leaders are grappling with such critical tasks as the Hawai'i 2050 sustainability project and the city's recycling plan.
Both are aimed at creating a manageable, if not better, place for our children and for future generations. As our legislators create policies affecting issues such as transportation, homelessness, land use and healthcare, tomorrow's leaders must learn the value of civic engagement.
Yesterday, one student from each of Hawai'i's 42 public high schools and two charter schools were honored with the Citizenship Award and given a $1,000 scholarship for college or career training. The award, now in its third year, is given by the state Department of Education in conjunction with the Hawai'i Hotel & Lodging Association, The Advertiser and other members of the business community.
The students were chosen because they best reflected the DOE's "Vision of a High School Graduate": to realize their goals, possess the attitudes, knowledge and skills to compete in a global society; exercise the rights and responsibilities of citizenship; and pursue post-secondary education and/or careers without need for remediation.
From raising money for the homeless to participating in community beautification projects, each of the students has made a positive impact in the community.
As a new crop of seniors prepare for graduation, let's hope they carry forward the same guiding principles that made these 44 exemplary students stand out.
Our future depends on it.
