"Robots: The Interactive Exhibition" opens at Pearlridge on June 8 to celebrate 10 years of the mall's free summer exhibits. The multimedia showcase is based on the animated movie "Robots" and includes large-scale educational, interactive and hands-on displays concentrated around Uptown and Downtown Center Court areas. Here are a partial list of activities:

  • Robot Explorers: Building a robotic probe to explore under water and outer space environments.

  • Crosstown Express: a Robot City cab simulator.

  • Build-A-Wonder-Bot: Create a robot to assist with a specific household chore.

  • Hall of Fame: display of famous historical robots from television and film.

    CONCERT: JUNE 13-AUG. 15

    The summertime family twilight series "Starbucks Wildest Show in Town" is back, marking the 10th anniversary under Starbucks sponsorship. Don't forget to pack your pau-hana dinner and enjoy the sounds of music and animals. The Opihi Pickers kick off the series; future shows include Kelly DeLima 'Ohana, Dennis and David Kamakahi, Holunape, Melveen Leed, Manoa DNA, Jake Shimabukuro and Brother Noland.

    The Makaha Sons head back to the Waikiki Shell with their annual concert "Take a Walk in the Country 5," themed "Ho'i Mai I Ke Kumu (Back to the Beginning)." Joining the veteran music makers will be Keali'i Reichel and Melveen Leed and opening act Hoku Zuttermeister. Adding hula will be Kealo Koko, Manu Boyd with the dancers of Halau O Ke 'A'ali'i Ku Makani and Chinky Mahoe with Halau Hula O Kawaili'ula.

    Whether you play slack key or just want to learn more about its meaning and legacy, the Slack Key Symposium II is an event you won't want to miss. The Hawai'i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts presents the event designed to celebrate the fancy fingerstyle genre. Guest artists include Haunani Apoliona, Dennis Kamakahi, Cyril Pahinui and Ozzie Kotani in a lively combination of talk story and performance, moderated by University of Hawai'i music professor Ricardo Trimillos.     FAMILY TIES: JUNE 17-JULY 22

    The Kids First! Film Festival, a project of the Coalition for Quality Children's Media, makes its debut at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa during the school's Centennial Celebration. Now in its eighth year, the film festival travels to more than 100 locations and offers sneak peaks at films from major studios, classic films, independents and shorts in a variety of styles including animation and live action. The films are evaluated by juries of adults and kids and must meet the Kids First! criteria of no gratuitous violence, no racial or cultural bias, no inappropriate content and no condescension toward children. "Cool Schools," "Tweens Feature Film," "Tails and Adventures" and "Little Blue: Live the Dream," above, are a few films on the schedule.

    DANCE: JUNE 23

    The Phoenix Dance Chamber will showcase the diversity and depth of Chinese dance in a concert titled "Spirit of China," directed by professor and folk dance specialist Liu Youlan of the Beijing Dance Academy and Phoenix's artistic director Diane Letoto.

    CONCERT: JUNE 29

    Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated pop/rock band Huey Lewis and the News, below, known for hits such as "The Power of Love," "I Want a New Drug" and "Do You Believe in Love," is heading for the Blaisdell Concert Hall. The band is known for light-hearted and upbeat music from a working-class perspective — pretty much synonymous with the movie "Back to the Future."

    FESTIVAL: JUNE 29-JULY 1

    BayFest has become one of Hawai'i's dominant concert events, and continuing the legacy this year are Canadian rockers 3 Days Grace (June 29), country starlet Gretchen Wilson (June 30) and the legendary Alan Jackson (left, July 1). And of course there's the lifestyle expo, military displays, carnival rides, games, boat rides around Coconut Island, food, competitions and big fireworks shows.

    FESTIVAL: JUNE 29-JULY 1

    We knew the oh-so-popular Taste of Honolulu food festival and fundraiser would be saved, with a new name and sponsor. The three-day event is dubbed "The Flavors of Honolulu" and will include clothing and craft vendors in addition to the food booths. The nonprofit Abilities Unlimited takes over for Easter Seals Hawaii, which had organized the event for 15 years.

    Here's what to expect:

  • Celebrity "What's Cooking" cook-offs with NFL legend Jesse Sapolu, entertainer Jimmy Borges, comedian Augie T and more.

  • Duet by Hawaii-born actress Tia Carrere and Grammy award winning producer Daniel Ho, 4 p.m. July 1.

  • A tribute to Don Ho, 8 p.m. June 30.

  • Participating restaurants include Ciao Mein, The Colony, Down to Earth, The Mandalay, Tony Romas, Tudo de Bom and more.
