LIHU'E
Meeting set on family shelter

Advertiser Staff

The state, county and Kaua'i Economic Opportunity have scheduled a public meeting at 7 p.m. tomorrow at the Kaua'i War Memorial Convention Hall on the Ka Uapo temporary housing program.

Officials plan to renovate the historic 5th Circuit Court building on 'Umi Street. It would be used for two years as a temporary shelter for working families with children.

Thereafter, the state Department of Accounting and General Services plans to use it for state offices.

Ka Uapo, which means "bridge," is seen as a transitional program that seeks families likely to qualify for affordable housing programs.
