  • "Disaster Management: Opportunities for Hawai'i's Future" — a two-part series on Hawai'i's potential as a hub for disaster management — will be presented, beginning Aug. 10, by the Hawai'i Science and Technology Council. The Second Friday Tech Download monthly networking breakfast discussion will be moderated by Stan Goosby, chief scientist of the Pacific Disaster Center. Panelists are Eileen Shea, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Integrated Data and Environmental Applications Office; and Jim Weyman, director of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center and meteorologist-in-charge of the Honolulu weather forecast office.   • The next meeting of a newly formed organization of community volunteers that has already helped such charity efforts as the Meals on Wheels program and Prevent Child Abuse Hawai'i, will meet today at the Moanalua Community Center. The meeting of the Hawai'i Society of Volunteers — 5:30 p.m., networking; 6 p.m. meeting, at 2500 Radford Drive — will feature speakers from U.S. Vets Hawai'i.   • "Gateway Marketplace, The 'Ohana Showcase," a business "craft fair" trade show, will be offered 4-9 p.m., sponsored by the Hawai'i Women's Business Center. The event is scheduled to coincide with the popular monthly First Friday Downtown arts tour, with an emphasis on arts-related businesses. Also on hand will be experts from HWBC advising how participating businesses can get, and benefit from, more exposure. The event will be at 1041 Nu'uanu Ave. (Fee for display tables.)
